Will the internet disappear? Are we living in a simulated world? Let's take a look together. Let's go to Sergey with this one. What does the web look like in 10 years? I mean, I think 10 years because of the progress and AI is so far beyond anything. We, not just the web. I mean, I don't know. I don't think we really know what the world looks like in 10 years. Demis Well, I think, I think that's a good answer. I do think the web, I think in the near term the web is going to change quite a lot. If you think of an agent web, like, does it really need to, you know, it doesn't necessarily need to see renders and things like we do as humans using the web. So I think things will be pretty different in a few years. Uh, this is kind of an under over question. AGI before 2030 or after 2030? Boy, you really kind of, uh, put it on that fine line. I'm gonna, I'm gonna say before, yeah. I'm just after, just after, okay? Exactly. Have to go back and get working harder. I can ask for it. He needs to deliver it. Exactly. Stop sandbagging. We need it next week. That's- I'll come to the review. Alright. So, would you hire someone that used AI in their interview, Demis? Oh, in their interview. Um, depends how they- I think using today's models, such tools, probably not. I think that would be. Depends how they would use it, actually. I think that's probably the answer. I mean, I never interviewed at all, so, um. I don't know. I feel it would be hypocritical for me to judge people exactly how they interview. Yeah, I have neither actually, so that's not a job. So I've been reading your tweets. You put a very interesting tweet up. There was a prompt that created some of a natural scene Oh yeah, here was the tweet Simulation at the press of a button does make you wonder With a couple of emojis And people ran with that and wrote some headlines saying Demis thinks we're in a simulation Are we in a simulation? Um, not in the way that, you know, Nick Bostrom and people talk about I think I do think I don't think this is some kind of game Even a lot of games I do think that underlying physics is information theory, so I do think we're in a computational universe, but it's not just a straightforward simulation. I can't answer you in one minute, but, um, but I think, I think the fact that these systems are able to model, um, real, uh, structures in nature is quite interesting and telling. And I've been thinking a lot about our work we've done with AlphaGo and AlphaFold in these types of systems. Ah, I've spoken a little about it. Maybe at some point I'll write up a scientific paper about what I think that really means in terms of what's actually going on here in reality. You want to make a headline? Well, I think that argument applies recursively, right? If we're in a simulation, then by the same argument, whatever beings are making the simulation are themselves in the simulation, for roughly the same reasons, and so on and so forth. Think, have, infinite simulations. There's some of it. And your best guess? I think that we're taking a very anthropocentric view, like when we say simulation in the sense that some kind of conscious being is running a simulation that we are in and that they have. The host asked a big question right off the bat. What will the internet look like in 10 years? Bryn's answer was very honest. He said 10 years is too far away. The pace of AI progress is far beyond anything we can foresee. I really don't know what the world will be like in 10 years. He wasn't just talking about the internet. but the entire world. A person who built the Google search engine telling you he can't see the internet of 10 years from now, that in itself is quite shocking. But Demis Hassabis's answer was more concrete and had more impact. His point was that if the internet is centered around AI agents, then it doesn't need to render pages and display visuals for humans to see like it does now. In other words, the future internet might not have the concept of web pages at all. What does that mean? Let me translate that for everyone. How do you go online right now? You open a browser, enter URL or search for keywords, click on a page, read text, look at images, watch videos, and then click the next link. The design logic of the entire internet is built around human eyes, fingers, and brains. Pages must look good, buttons must be easy to click, and information must be easy to find. But what if the one going online for you in the future isn't you, but an AI agent? It doesn't need fancy layouts, beautiful images, or smooth animations. It only needs the underlying data. It can pull information directly from databases, compare prices, place orders, fill out forms, and run analyses 10,000 times faster than you, and it will never be annoyed by pop-up ads. This is already happening. As of July 2026, Google's own agents and a host of open-source internet browser tools can already take over many of your online tasks, like booking flights, comparing prices, managing emails, or filling out forms. Think about what this actually means. If the primary users of the internet shift from humans to agents, the entire technical architecture and business model of the internet must be reimagined from the ground up. How will ads be placed when your AI agent is never swayed by advertisements? How will SEO even work? Your agent won't search for a specific keyword, it will call APIs directly. So, how should e-commerce be designed. Your agent won't browse product detail pages. It will only look at specs and prices. This is why Sergey Brin said he doesn't know what the world will look like in the future. It wasn't just being polite, he truly meant it. He helped build the internet with his own hands, yet even he admits that the speed and depth of this transformation have surpassed the creator's own ability to foresee it. Next, the host asked a question everyone cares about. Will AGI, artificial general intelligence arrive before or after 2030. Sergey Brin said before without hesitation while Demis Hassabis thought for a moment and said just after. Both were essentially talking about the same thing. AGI will arrive around 2030. The difference is only a year or two but behind that difference lie two different roles and mindsets. Sergey Brin is an investor, a founder, and a promoter. His role is naturally more optimistic and aggressive. His before, answer reflects a certain kind of confidence. Because he has seen the evolution speed of Gemini models firsthand and participated in Google's research, while Demis Hassabis, as a scientist doing the actual technical work, is more aware of the many pitfalls between near-AI and true-AGI, so his, just after, reflects the caution of a researcher. reflects the caution of a researcher. Bryn even made a joke at the time, saying, don't feel pressured, Demis, because it was Hassabis' team responsible for actually building the AI, not Bryn himself. So, what is a GI? Simply put, it's an AI system that can reach or even surpass human levels in almost all cognitive tasks. It's not just being good at one thing, like playing chess or writing code, that's called narrow AI. It's being more advanced than humans at everything. It can reason, learn, plan, and create. There is no essential difference between it and a smart human. Once a GI is achieved, what might follow immediately is OSI, which is artificial superintelligence. It's not just at the human level, it's beyond humanity. When Hasabis was interviewed by Bloomberg Businessweek in June 2026, he said that humanity doesn't have much time left to prepare. The last topic is the most mind-bending. The host asked about a tweet Hasabis had posted, where he used AI to generate a hyper-realistic natural scene with the caption, press the button from nature to virtual. Then, the media started writing headlines claiming that the CEO of DeepMind believes we are living in a virtual world. Hassabis quickly clarified, saying he doesn't think we live in a virtual world, but rather that a more advanced civilization is running a simulation and we are just code within it. But he made a very profound statement. I believe the nature of physics is, at its core, information theory. We are indeed deep inside a computational universe, and this isn't just a simple, straightforward simulation. What does that mean? He is talking about something at the intersection of physics and philosophy. Quantum mechanics tells us that matter at its most fundamental level isn't solid stuff, but probability waves, it's information. Everything originates from information. Hasabis means that the universe itself is a giant computer, but it's not being run by someone. It operates naturally. He also mentioned that systems like AlphaGo and alpha fold can precisely simulate the structures of the natural world, the laws of and protein folding. This fact itself shows that the underlying logic of nature is computable. If the natural world weren't computational, how could AI possibly simulate it so accurately? Brin's response is even more brilliant. He points out a logical recursion problem in the simulation theory. If we are being simulated, then the civilization simulating us, by that same logic, must also be simulated by a civilization at a higher level. If you follow this logic all the way up, you end up with an infinite nest of simulations. You either accept this infinite regress, or you admit that at some level, there exists a stopping point, a true, non-simulated layer. Then, Bryn said something truly insightful. I think we are far too anthropocentric. When we talk about simulation, we assume there's some higher existence with consciousness and desires like us that is running us, but perhaps the layer above us is nothing like that at all, and we simply lack the capacity to reason about that higher existence. This idea is profound. It speaks to a kind of epistemological humility.
